The Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Malaysia. I visited in April of 2024 with my girlfriend while on a tour of the country. The courtyard at the base of the steps was swarming with tourists and I set out to capture an image that illustrated the chaos and mix of birds, monkeys and tourists. In the midday heat with the humidity through the roof, I set the camera on the tripod with the composition I wanted and started shooting some frames. 

After a while, a little girl snaked her way through the crowd and homed in on me. She stopped and played amongst the pigeons for a few moments while her mum filmed her. It was a pure moment of joy for that little girl - playful, carefree and not a stress in the world. I think there is part of her in all of us and whenever I look at this photograph it reminds me not to take things so seriously, and that it's okay to play and enjoy what's in front of me rather than live inside my imagination.
